You know that moment after working out, swimming or just chilling at the ballpark when you glance in the mirror and notice your mane’s not as magnificent as it appeared that morning? Yup, long days packed with activities can undo even the simplest coif. So we turned to New York City salon owner and celebrity hair stylist Angelo David for tips to keep you looking as sharp as Becks here around the clock. Take notes.

It can be difficult to style your hair in the morning for work the same way you want it to look when you head out on the town that night. A more polished look can be achieved with heavier product.

1. Twice is nice
When purchasing shampoo, be sure to seek one that specifically designed for men. Guys have higher pH levels than women, and these products are made strong to clean well. Don’t skimp either. “I always tell my patients to shampoo twice,” explains David. “The first round loosens dirt and any product you may have had in your hair, and the second one actually washes it out.”

2. Product is personal
Gel, cream, hair spray—so many options! Depending on the look you want to achieve, different hair products can help. “Gels tend to give your hair more of a firm hold, while creams and pomades are a bit lighter,” says David. “With a cream or pomade, you’ll still be able to run your hands through your hair to style and manipulate it.” Hair spray is usually chosen to help really hold an already styled look, like a pompadour, in place.

3. Work it out
Let’s say you hit up the gym after work, before a casual dinner with your lady. With no time to shower in between, how can you prevent your hair from looking like a hot mess? Try pulling it back with a sweatband! “Headbands do double duty, keeping your hair out of your face while also soaking up sweat,” says David. “It will give you a better chance at maintaining volume and structure.”

This bloke was clearly following our advice during his final games for PSG. Just sayin’.

4. It’s raining, men
Running late, didn’t check the forecast and stuck in a downpour sans umbrella? Your hairstyle has probably totally fallen, but lucky for you, if there’s product in it, the water will in fact reactivate the product, David says. “Take a paper towel and use it to remove any extra moisture.” Then simply recreate your look.

5. Take the plunge
We too were shocked to learn our locks didn’t look as sexy as Fabio’s as we emerged from the waves. So be prepared and pack product. “When you get out of the water, rub some through your hair and style it with your hands,” says David. Forgot to throw it in your pack? David suggests using some sun block as an alternative. “It provides a decent hold, and the oil will actually protect the hair.”

6. Work hard, play harder
It can be difficult to style your hair in the morning for work the same way you want it to look when you head out on the town that night. A more polished look can be achieved with heavier product. “If you want that Mad Men look in the evening, style your hair as you normally would in the morning,” says David. “Then before you head out, just add some hair spray.” Your style will shine—and so will you.
