The holiday season is about time spent with family. It’s also about drinking until you’re ready to tell your family what you really think. And alcohol experts agree: what you sip in the summertime isn’t always appropriate for the chillier winter months. So try these five creative cold weather cocktails, all guaranteed to impress at parties while making conversations with annoying relatives the epitome of comfort and joy.

Alpine Hot Spiced Wine

alpine hot spiced wine is a fantastic holiday cocktail

We’re aware that alcohol only makes you feel warmer while actually cooling you down. As we’re guessing none of you plan to sleep in a snow bank tonight, that doesn’t really matter. Drink this toasty beverage and feel the glow. This recipe serves six to eight people, or just one guy who likes booze a whole lot.

What You’ll Need:

  • A bottle of full-bodied red wine
  • A sliced lemon
  • A sliced orange
  • Half a cup of sugar
  • A tablespoon of black peppercorns
  • Two tablespoons of cardamom seeds
  • Three tablespoons of honey
  • Cinnamon sticks

How You Make It:

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, save for the cinnamon sticks. Simmer for 15 minutes. Ladle into mugs and garnish with cinnamon sticks. Savor that jolly holiday feeling.

Holiday Rum Punch

holiday rum punch is a fantastic holiday cocktail

Think of this as an “adult” version of the apple cider you loved so much as a kid. Except now you aren’t a kid anymore and you need something to take the edge off. Holiday rum punch is great for parties or whenever the snow and cold leaves you feeling a little down.

What You’ll Need:

  • A bottle of rum
  • Six oranges
  • Cloves to taste
  • A half cup of superfine sugar
  • Half a gallon of sweet apple cider
  • Cinnamon and nutmeg to taste

How You Make It:

Slice the oranges into rounds, stud them with cloves and bake until soft. Place the oranges into a punch bowl before adding the sugar and rum. Light the rum on fire—Jamaican rum works best—then in a few minutes begin slowly adding cider to extinguish the flames. Stir in the cinnamon and nutmeg, and keep this one hot, the way it’s meant to be drunk.

White Chocolate Eggnog

white chocolate egg nog is a fantastic holiday cocktail

Why make the same boring eggnog you have every year? One taste of this alternative and you’ll never go back. It’s sort of like a white chocolate Frappuccino. And don’t front like you don’t sip a grip of those in the summer. There’s nothing unmanly about enjoying a delicious drink.

What You’ll Need:

  • One quart of eggnog
  • Half a cup of white chocolate liqueur
  • Half a cup of white rum
  • One cup of whipped cream
  • Grated white chocolate and pumpkin pie spice for garnish

How You Make It:

Combine the rum, nog and white chocolate liqueur into a punch bowl and use a whisk to make the mixture frothy. Pour the white chocolate eggnog into fancy glasses, topping each with a heaping teaspoon of whipped cream. Garnish with grated white chocolate and a couple shakes of pumpkin pie spice and take a bow.

negus is a fantastic holiday cocktail

Winter is perhaps the best time of year to drink your insides raisin dry with vino, so here’s another hot wine winner. Adding a little sugar and lemon into the mix gives you something truly special.

What You’ll Need:

  • One bottle of ruby port
  • Water
  • Two tablespoons of sugar
  • One lemon

How You Make It:

Peel the lemon, making sure to remove all the whitish bits. Slice the lemon into thin strips and combine in a double boiler with the sugar and port. Heat the mixture until the sugar dissolves, then add a cup of boiling water to the mix. Strain the concoction into a pitcher pre-heated for the occasion.  Some like to add a dash of nutmeg on top. Depending on drinking habits, this will serve between four and 12 people.

Campfire Cocktail

If you’re brave enough to do any winter camping, this is the drink for you and your bros. Note our advice above about how alcohol doesn’t actually warm you up but cools you down. Drinking is all fun and games until someone gets hypothermia.

What You’ll Need:

  • One and a half ounces of bourbon
  • Four pieces of crystallized ginger
  • Two dashes of bitters
  • Half an ounce of fresh lemon juice
  • Half an ounce of honey
  • One ounce of apple cider

How You Make It:

Muddle the lemon, ginger and honey, then combine with the apple cider, bitters, bourbon and some ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain into a rocks glass. Skewer a piece of crystalized ginger or add an apple slice for garnish. Drink like a man, then go out and kill something.
