Whiskey is great for giving you a false sense of warmth, but it’s also fantastic in hot cocktails. This is especially true when the holidays have come and gone and you’re faced with three more months of biting weather, dangerous ice, and dead trees. Warm your belly and your heart with these five whiskey winter warmers.

Hot Buttered Bourbon

Hot Buttered Bourbon
Serves 2

4 tablespoons unsalted butter
6 ounces water
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 ounces bourbon
2 cinnamon sticks for garnish

In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter with the water, vanilla extract, sugar, and cinnamon. Whisk together until well incorporated, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Add the bourbon into the pan, mix well, remove from the heat, and divide between two mugs. Garnish each with a cinnamon stick and enjoy.

Spiked Hot Cider

Spiked Hot Cider
Serves 2

6 ounces apple cider
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground allspice
2 ounces apple brandy
2 ½ ounces whiskey
2 apple slices for garnish
2 cinnamon sticks for garnish

Add the cider, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice to a saucepan over medium heat and whisk together. When the cider is hot, reduce the heat to a simmer and add the apple brandy and whiskey. Stir well, remove from the heat, divide between two mugs, and garnish each with an apple slice and cinnamon stick.

Orange Spice Toddy

Serves 2

10 ounces water
2 chai spice tea bags
6 cloves
2 tablespoons honey
2 ounces fresh-squeezed orange juice
4 ounces whiskey

Add the chai spice tea bags, cloves, and water to a saucepan over medium heat. Let the tea and cloves steep for at least 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags and the cloves, add the honey, and mix or whisk until it’s dissolved. Then add the orange juice and whiskey. Mix well, remove from the heat, and divide between two snifters or mugs.

Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Peppermint Hot Chocolate
Serves 2

1 ½ cups milk
1 tablespoon butter
2 ounces dark chocolate, crumbled
4 ounces peppermint schnapps
4 ounces whiskey
Marshmallows for garnish

Add the milk, butter, and chocolate to a saucepan over medium heat. Mix until the butter and chocolate are melted and incorporated. Reduce the heat to a simmer, and add the schnapps and whiskey. Mix well, remove from the heat, then divide between two large mugs. Top each with a handful of marshmallows and enjoy.

The Hot Ginger

The Hot Ginger
Serves 2

10 ounces water
2 ginger-lemon tea bags
3 cinnamon sticks
4 ounces 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey
2 ounces ginger liqueur

Add the tea bags and one cinnamon stick to a saucepan with the water over low heat and steep for at least five minutes. Remove the tea bags and cinnamon stick, then add the whiskey and ginger liqueur. Mix well, remove from the heat, then divide between two mugs or glasses. Garnish each with a cinnamon stick and enjoy.
