There are few things in life that are better than hitting the open road behind the wheel of your own automobile. The long stretches of pavement, the sights and sounds of the freeways, and some good friends all make for a pretty awesome time. But on a road trip, the destination is pretty important too, even if the journey is sometimes the best part. And if you have a destination in mind, you probably hope to get there in a reasonable amount of time. Stopping for food all the time is a sure fire way to slow down your road trip, so it’s important to make sure you’ve got some grub packed for you and your buddies. What type of food should you pack? Trail Mix. A pretty standard choice for, well, any sort of outing, trail mix has enough flavor and substance to hold you over for quite some time. There’s really no hard and fast rule for as what exactly should be in your trail mix. Some nuts are good, for a little protein, and some fruit as well. But go ahead and throw some candy or some chocolate chips in there too. It’s your road trip; do what you want!


Jerky. A stable of any road trip, jerky of all kinds is practically compulsory for men. It doesn’t have to be beef; you can find delicious jerky made from a lot of different meats. While jerky may be loaded with salt, it’s possible to find low sodium varieties as well. But health concerns aside, jerky is essential because it lasts a long time, doesn’t take up much room, and it takes a while to chew. See, it makes the trip go faster! Get some, you won’t be disappointed.


Fruit. On the opposite side of the food spectrum from jerky, fruit is valuable for its convenience. Built simply for your hand, fruit gives you some simple but delicious flavors, and it’s healthy for you, as well. Most fruits leave very little waste, meaning trash is kept to a minimum. Spoilage can be a little bit of an issue, but there are ways around that. Keep the fruit in a cool, dry place and you should be pretty good. But if your road trip is super long, you can get super clever and go with some dried fruit. It lasts longer, but you still get most of the benefits of eating fruit. There’s no reason to miss out on this is essential food.


Tuna. There aren’t too many foods that are more simple than tuna. It’s healthy, simple, and can be prepared anyway you like, really. You can eat it straight from the can or the pouch, or dress it up, slap in on some bread, and have it on the go. It’s a center for road trip because tuna goes a long way. It can be blended with a lot of ingredients to make it more filling, and if you opt to have it plain, you’re getting some good protein that’s going to help you and your buddies be at your best while you cruise the open road.


Gas Station Fruit Pie. Don’t laugh! You need this stuff! Look, road trips are about having a good time. You only live once, as the saying goes. At some point on your road trip, you’re going to need to fill up on gas. That means you can hit the gas station for supplies. Go for the little fruit pies. You know which ones, the little ones in the package. Sure, they have no nutritional value, but they’re a taste of America! What’s more essential than that! Big Sub Sandwiches. Depending on your region, you may call the submarine sandwich a hero, a hoagie, a grinder, or maybe even something else. No matter the name, this sandwich is big. It can be really big, actually, and it can be really delicious. Not to mention the fact that it’s probably the biggest meal you can eat in the car while still being able to drive.
