Ai Takahashi (born September 14, 1986 in Fukui, Japan) is a Japanese pop singer and leader of the Hello! Project mothership group Morning Musume. Takahashi joined the group in August of 2001 as a member of the fifth generation.
Career
Takahashi Ai was selected from Love Audition 21 to join the famous Japanese girl group Morning Musume as part of the fifth generation in August of 2001. She made her debut in October 2001 on the single "Mr. Moonlight ~Ai no Big Band~" and released her first album with the group, 4th ikimasshoi! in March of 2002.
In September 2002, Takahashi Ai was added to the lineup of the Morning Musume subgroup Minimoni. She released several singles and an album with them before their indefinite hiatus in 2004. She also appeared in their movie, Minimoni ja Movie Okashi na Daibouken! in 2003.
Morning Musume was split into two groups in 2003: Otomegumi and Sakuragumi. Takahashi was a member of Sakuragumi. In addition to touring seperately from Otomegumi, Sakuragumi also released two singles before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2004.
In 2005, Takahashi was one of the few members selected to be part of the 2005 summer shuffle groups. She, along with fellow Morning Musume member Reina Tanaka and two others, contributed the song "Inshouha no Renoir You ni" under the name of Elegies.
Takahashi released her first solo single, "Yume Kara Samete" in 2006 as a digital download.
In May 2007, leader Hitomi Yoshizawa graduated from Morning Musume, leaving Miki Fujimoto as the leader, and Takahashi as the subleader. However, just 25 days later, Fujimoto quit. Takahashi became the leader of Morning Musume on June 1, 2007. She commemorated this event by chopping off her hair and making weird faces on television shows.
