Ranked Number 29 in Stuff Magazine’s “102 Sexiest Women in the World,” in 2002, Audrey Tautou is a French actress best known for her roles in the French film Amelie, and the American film The Da Vinci Code. While Audrey has been offered numerous American film roles, she prefers to work in her native France. She says she will cross over to American roles only when offered interesting things.
Audrey was born in Beaumont, France, and got into comedic acting at a very early age. She began lessons at Cours Florent, and in 1998 won the best young actress award in the “Jeune Comedien de Cinema Festival” (young comedian film festival) in Bezier. This afforded Audrey the opportunity to be noticed by Tonie Marshall, who gave her a role in her film Venus Beaute (1999), for which Audrey won Best New Actress Cesar (the French equivalent of the Academy Award).
Audrey came to international attention through the film Amelie in 2001. The film was a worldwide success, and garnered Audrey another Cesar nomination. Audrey did an English language film in 2002, Stephen Frears’ Dirty Pretty Things, which met with modest success. However, it’s fairly dark subject matter (organ trafficking) prevented it from reaching the masses. The next English language film for Audrey was 2006’s The Da Vinci Code. While an enormous commercial success, The Da Vinci Code was met with mixed reception by critics.
Audrey is now back in her native France attempting to reclaim some artistic integrity. She continues to star in French movies, and claims that she will cross back over to America when a proper role is presented. Audrey enjoys reading poetry, looking at paintings, and listening to classical music in her down time.
