Carice Van Houten is a Dutch stage and film actress. She has won three Golden Calves (the Dutch equivalent of the Academy Award), for her roles in Suzy Q (1999), Undercover Kitty (2001), and Black Book (2006). Black Book was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who made a name for himself in America before returning to his native country of the Netherlands. Despite her quote about not being interested in Hollywood, Carice has a slew of American projects slated, including starring opposite several of Hollywood's hottest actors in three different films.
Carice was born in Leiderdorp, the Netherlands. Her mother, Margje Stasse, is on the board of Dutch educational TV and her father, Theodore Van Houten, is a writer and broadcaster. She has one younger sister, who is also an aspiring actress (if she hasn’t given up already in the face of Carice’s stunning achievements…Talk about setting the bar high, big sister).
Carice’s career had been going well in the Netherlands for several years, following her two Golden Calf wins in 1999 and 2001. However, it was in 2006, when she won her third Golden Calf for her role in Paul Verhoeven’s Black Book that her career gained international attention. Verhoeven is perhaps best known for directing Basic Instinct, Total Recall, and Showgirls. Carice also struck up a relationship with her co-star on this film, Sebastian Koch, a German actor.
Since Black Book, Carice has experienced a meteoric rise in fame. Despite her reluctance to embrace Hollywood, and her desire to continue doing Dutch films, Carice is slated to appear opposite Tom Cruise and Kenneth Branagh in Valkyrie, opposite Leonardo di Caprio and Russell Crowe in Body of Lies, and opposite Jude Law and Forest Whitaker in Repossession Mambo. Contrary to her intentions, Carice seems destined for mega-superstardom and riches. We’re sorry, Carice.
