What did you want to be when you grew up?
I have always been fascinated with weather since I was a little girl, stemming from my favorite childhood movie, The Wizard of Oz. Growing up in a small town in South Jersey, I was surrounded by winter snowstorms and summer thunderstorms. I even wrote in my eighth grade yearbook, "I plan to become a Meteorologist."
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I graduated from Brown University in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in geological sciences. I am furthering my meteorological studies through Mississippi State's Distance Learning Program, which will be completed in 2010.
Where else have you worked in broadcast journalism?
I started my broadcast career at WSEE in Erie, PA in 2007. In addition to providing the weather forecasts for the weekend, I also reported during the weekdays.
In the summer of 2009, WSEE merged with the NBC affiliate in Erie, WICU. I then was responsible for working on both stations, providing the weather for WICU on the weekends and filling in when needed on either station.
In addition to providing the weather for the Erie viewing area, I also forecasted for the Caribbean and Central America, including more than 30 islands and locations.
Forecasting for various places has allowed me to cover several types of weather, from lake effect snow and extreme heat to severe storms and tropical cyclones. I am proud to say that I was a member of the WSEE Stormteam during one of the snowiest seasons in history. During the 2008-09 Season, Erie picked up 145.8 inches of snow, making it the second snowiest season on record.
What has been your favorite story you have ever covered and why?
I would like to share my most memorable story, a story that rocked homes across the country. 49 lives were lost during the crash of flight 3407 in Buffalo, Ny back in February of 2009. Being a reporter in Erie, I was deeply concerned that perhaps there could have been family members in our area on that flight.
Later, we did learn that the parents of a Westfield, NY family lost their lives in the crash. I met with the son of those parents, who shared his story with me. He was actually at the airport waiting for his parents to arrive, only to find out that there was a terrible disaster and the plane went down. It was a heart-wrenching moment as he shared the memories and great times he had with his parents. It was an honor to share the lives of his parents with the entire Erie audience.
What hobbies do you enjoy?
In my spare time, I love to travel, spend time outdoors, watch movies, and be surrounded by good company. I also love spending time with my one-year-old Beagle, Lola.
Sports have always played a big part in my life, especially when I was recruited to run track for Division I Brown University. Since I graduated, I now resort to my own workouts and putting my faith in Philadelphia sports teams! E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles!
What are your favorite things about living in East Tennessee?
I'm just excited to see and learn what East Tennessee has to offer. Everyone seems incredibly nice.
What does "Straight from the Heart" mean to you?
It means connecting with my viewers on a personal level so they can put their trust in me when it comes to their forecasts. What matters most are our viewers and putting them first is essential. It's my job to touch each and everyone's hearts, no matter what the story of the day is.
