Emilia Clarke is a beautiful English actress with green-blue eyes and an outstanding bustline, known for landing the high-profile, highly nude role of Danaerys Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones almost straight out of drama school.
The London native grew up in Berkshire. Her mother is a businesswoman and her father a theatrical sound-man. Through the latter connection, she became interested in the theatre and movies from a young age, and a particular fan of Audrey Hepburn.
Emilia graduated from Drama Centre London in 2009 and made two appearances in television roles before auditioning for Thrones, which is shot in Belfast and Malta. In a blog for The New York Times, Will Self described her as "simultaneously large of breast and short of stature." She verified his description as Danaerys, a key character in writer George R.R. Martin's seemingly endless saga of a medieval fantasy world, which Self described as a pork-sword-and-sorcery series. But Clarke generated enthusiasm for her acting as well as her physique.
Although immediately rumoured to be seeing co-star Richard Madden, who plays the ill-fated Robb Stark, Emilia denied the gossip. "I'm in a very serious relationship with my work," she told the Evening Standard. She dyed her naturally dark hair a very unnatural platinum for the part, but otherwise proved to be real.
In an interview with New York magazine, Clarke said she was aware that her role requires significant nudity, but is "it’s not something I was excited about filming. It was definitely tricky." Doing a highly promoted series is enough of a challenge for a young actress without the added expectation of cable nudity, according to Emilia. But with Danaerys, she said, the nudity is integral to the role.
It was also a challenge to eat a horse heart, even a fake that was "a congealed jam kind of thing," Clarke said. "That was one of those amazing scenes that you get as an actor that there’s just no acting required — at all," Emilia told the magazine. "It was disgusting!... On the outtakes, there will be me heaving into a bucket."
In some respects, the young actress remains more of a mystery than her well-known character, variously listed as being born in 1987 or 1988.
