Freida Pinto is a beautiful Indian model-turned-actress who became a global star in her first movie, the 2009 Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire. She confirmed her instant A-list status by snagging a role in a Woody Allen project.
A Mumbai native, Freida comes from a solidly Indian family, although her Portuguese surname suggests a mixed heritage from the time of European settlements. (It means chick, as in baby bird.) Asked by Maxim whether she had any Hispanic blood, Freida said, "Maybe from ages and ages ago. I think so because I think the Hispanic look is quite prominent in India as such. A lot of Indians are confused as Hispanics even when they travel abroad." Her parents are from Mangalore, a coastal town in southern India. Her father is a banker and her mother is a high school principal. Her sister Sharon is a producer with the Indian news channel NDTV.
Freida is a trained dancer, with a background in some Indian classical forms as well as salsa. She studied at Carmel of St. Joseph School in Malad and completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Literature from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.
Ms. Pinto did some modeling while still in school, and after graduation quickly became a major face on the Mumbai circuit, gaining representation from Elite Model Management India. In India, she was a model for products ranging from Wrigley’s chewing gum to jewelry, cosmetics and ice cream. Although she is not overly tall, Freida's thin build is ideal for fashion shoots, and she has done layouts in Femina & Femina Girl, FNL and elsewhere. Product endorsements include Chanel perfume and VISA. Her catwalk modeling includes starring in Lakme Fashion Week among countless other appearances. (Despite her acclaimed beauty, Freida could not avoid the advertising industry's institutional racism, as L'Oreal lightened her skin tones in its ads.)
During 2006-7, Freida Pinto was a TV presenter on Full Circle, a travel show which showcased culture in the Pacific Islands and Asia. Broadcast on Zee International Asia Pacific, the show sent Freida on assignments to Afghanistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Fiji among other countries.
But she also pursued acting opportunities, doing some amateur theatre. Freida auditioned for the female lead in Quantum of Solace, but in what will go down as a famously bad decision, producers rejected her with the stinging assessment that she was too skinny and flat-chested to be a Bond girl. (The part instead went to lovely although not excessively statuesque Olga Kurylenko.)
Freida's lack of cleavage had also hampered her television career, she told Contactmusic. In India, she said, ""We have the voluptuous, full-figured woman thing." But she was self-confident enough to reject pressure to get implants, telling the interviewer, "People say I need to get a boob job, but I`m just comfortable the way I am."
When Freida auditioned for Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, though, her natural beauty and presence quickly grabbed his attention. He cast as Latika, the love interest and emotional center of a movie centered on the slums of Mumbai. Doyle later compared the moment to his discovery of Kelly Macdonald for Trainspotting. She was paired with the young English actor Dev Patel, a TV star in the UK on Skins.
Slumdog Millionaire became a sensation on the festival circuit, winning the Cadillac People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and built on this success in general release. Made on a $15 million budget, the movie took in almost 10 times that much in the U.S. alone. Despite her immediate success, Ms. Pinto was serious about improving her skills. After Slumdog's release, she took a three-month workshop with acting guru Barry John.
Ms. Pinto credited her hometown for helping her achieve success. Even for the middle-class, she told Maxim, it is a tough place, putting an emphasis on drive and ambition. As in other centers of the movie industry, Mumbai residents grow up with movies and movie stars, and that exposure reinforced her dreams.
With her beautiful eyes, flawless skin and nice legs, Freida Pinto quickly established herself as the next international It Girl. After the movie's premiere, she was reportedly the most searched for person on the web on November 18th, 2008. Success begets success, and with many offers to consider, Freida chose carefully. She agreed to a Woody Allen project with Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin, filming in London in the second half of 2009. And acting well is the best revenge. Freida has not added any inches to what female reviewers describe as her "ruler" figure, which is similar to Olivia Wilde. Nevertheless, Bond producers approached her to be in their next film, now saying merely that she was "too young" in 2008. They evenly floated a trial balloon of hiring Boyle as director. With fitting irony, Freida reportedly turned them down.
Success did affect Freida's personal life, which began to imitate her hit movie. After a five-year relationship, and two-year engagement, she broke up with Rohan Antao. Media reports soon linked Ms. Pinto to her co-star, Dev Patel, six years her junior. In late August 2009, Freida was reported to be wearing an engagement ring on set in London.
Freida Pinto Quote
This industry is for fighters and those who do not give up! It is very important to believe in yourself. Even when a hundred people rejected me, I did not lose hope and finally one of the biggest directors of all times [Danny Boyle] believed in me! Also working in this film [Slumdog Millionaire] has taught me a lot, not just in terms of acting but also about myself, which is an integral part of being a good actor!
