She became known for her work in period pieces like Hamlet, Howard's End and Wings of the Dove for which was nominated for an Oscar. She then took a liking to the strange and eccentric characters for which she is now often associated.
Some of her more out there roles include Bellatrix Lestrange from the Harry Potter movies and Marla Singer in Fight Club.
