Born in Middlesex, Julia went to Newnham Junior School in Eastcote (from which she has very fond memories), and Haydon Secondary School in Northwood, where, notably, the lovely Fearne Cotton also went (but a little bit after Julia...)
Julia moved out to Henley-On-Thames with her first husband and has since made the area her home. "I love Henley... it's a beautiful place to bring up children. Coming home from weeks away at work I can drop my shoulders and start to relax the minute I drive over Henley bridge." Julia now lives in a house she and her partner of 8 years, Andrew, built last year on the river. They share the timber-framed eco-house with Julia's daughters Maddy (18) and Sophie (15), their two cats Dollop and Doodle and Andrew's sons Fred (17) and Charles (14) when visiting from their home in Australia.
Julia 'fell' into Interior Design when the only place offering a Saturday job was a soft-furnishings showroom down the road from her home. She had to lie about her age (being only 14) but proved her worth, fell in love with the industry, and was offered the Showroom manager position when she was just 18. Since then she has trained in all areas of design including lighting, spatial planning and kitchen design to name a few.
Having worked for various top Interior Design companies, Julia decided to start her own business in 1997 in order to manage her life as a single mum and financial provider more effectively. "I don't really know how I coped in the early days. It was very stressful and I spent 5 years clinging on by my fingernails!" Sharing a small terraced house with a friend and her two sons in a similar situation, Julia learnt tough lessons in coping with less than ideal living arrangements. “In many ways that time in my life has given me a far greater appreciation of how it feels to be really hard on your luck. My friend Kass and I would often not be able to afford to eat after feeding the 4 children. Maddy and Sophie shared a room 7 feet by 5 feet for several years. I am, therefore, able to empathise with the families we work for on the shows and really appreciate my home and the life I now have.” Julia's enormous energy and determination saw her through and the business went from strength to strength. In 2002 her 20 year ambition to present on television was fulfilled when she was invited to appear on '60 Minute Makeover' on ITV1. Other appearances include GMTV, How to Find a Husband UKTVStyle, BBC Breakfast, and Tonight with Trevor McDonald.
"Tonight with Trevor was a great experience. It was a very valuable programme where we set out to prove that renovating Victorian housing stock is a more effective solution to dealing with degraded housing areas than demolition. I still keep in contact with the people who work tirelessly to save their homes and their communities. It is a disgrace that people have to live under threat of losing their homes, of which they are so proud, when there is no clear and sensible reason given by the Government for their demolition."
Alongside her television work Julia enjoys writing for many magazines and appearing in home shows.
In the last 12 months Julia has filmed two series for DIY SOS, BBC1, with Nick Knowles and the building team and is now working on a third.
