Biography

Kate Louise Thornton is an English journalist and television presenter, most famous for being the first host of The X Factor, and best known internationally for her coverage of the Concert for Diana.

Kate Thornton is a talented and versatile presenter. She started her career as an editorial assistant at the Sunday Mirror and in 1995 became the youngest ever editor of Smash Hits.

She continues to write, and has written regularly for The Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror and she currently writes for The Sunday Times and is the Contributing Editor for Marie Claire.


Her presenting credits include some of the most high profile programmes on British Television including: Top of the Pops, Don’t Try This at Home, Holiday, Pop Idol Extra and The Brits.

She has presented 3 Series and a Celebrity special of ITV's biggest hit The X-Factor, co-presented Comic Relief for BBC1, was the host of the new awards show Greatest Britons.

Kate co-hosted the Royal Variety Show with Phillip Schofield, and Britain Sings Christmas in December 2007.

Having been briefly linked to Robbie Williams in the past, and admitted that she is Simon Cowell's "nightmare" date, Kate has been dating DJ Darren Emerson since 2004. She is a Manchester United supporter. The couple got engaged in 2007. She gave birth to her first child, a boy named Ben on 13 May 2008.

She was a guest on The Paul O'Grady Show' on Wednesday 25 February 2009, and she is also the voice-over on the advert for Faryl Smith's new album.

Kate began her role as the main anchor on ITV's Loose Women replacing Jackie Brambles on 10th September 2009 and her warm and natural style has made her an immediate hit with viewers.
