Introduction

Part juvenile delinquent, part wisecracking dame, Ke$ha is an American recording artist who took the formula perfected by Katy Perry and Lady Gaga (crazy ass clothing + ambiguous sexuality = musical success) and rode it to the top of the charts. Regarding the dollar sign in her stage name, Ke$ha stated that she was being ironic, in that she does not believe in placing an emphasis on earning money. No word yet on whether she has refused to cash any of her enormous royalty checks.

Life Story

Ke$ha was born in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles to a single parent. The family moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1991 when her mother -- a longtime songwriter -- inked a publishing deal. Ke$ha spent the rest of her early years in Music City. The Sebert family was featured on an episode of the Paris Hilton reality series "The Simple Life" in 2005, as the host family. At the age of seventeen she dropped out of high school, after being convinced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin to return to Los Angeles and pursue a music career.

While in Los Angeles, Ke$ha survived on low income, moonlighting as a waitress and dabbling in telemarketing to make ends meet while furthering her music career in studio and seeing talent scouts. She lived with her alleged father when she first moved there, after being introduced by her mother, and subsequently moved in with a boy in whom she was interested. She later lived in a shared house in Laurel Canyon where the Eagles recorded Hotel California and at one point had lived out of her gold 1978 Trans Am.

Ke$ha wanted Prince to produce her music, so she found and snuck into his Beverly Hills home. Once discovered, she was thrown out, but not before she left her demo with Prince, who did not contact her afterwards. She also had the opportunity to sing background for Paris Hilton's single, "Nothing in this World", which led to an incident later where she vomited in Hilton's closet and wrote a song about it. Ke$ha co-wrote The Veronicas' single, "This Love" with Toby Gad, sang background vocals for Britney Spears' song "Lace and Leather" and appeared in the video for Katy Perry's single, "I Kissed a Girl". Her appearance in the video arose due to her being friends with Perry; they met frequently as aspiring pop singers in Los Angeles and shared many musical collaborators.

Ke$ha's breakthrough came in early 2009 after appearing on Flo Rida's number one single "Right Round". The collaboration came about when Ke$ha was hanging out in studio with Flo Rida and Dr. Luke, who was producing the song; Flo Rida decided that the song needed a female voice and Ke$ha was then suggested for the part by Dr. Luke. Flo Rida liked the end result so much that they did two more songs. She is not credited for her feature on "Right Round" and therefore did not collect any money for the part. She also refused to appear in the video because she wanted to become a legitimate artist in her own right.

Soon after, it was announced that Ke$ha had signed with RCA Records through Dr. Luke, after being sought after by many major labels, and was working on her debut album. On March 27, 2009, she appeared onstage alongside 3OH!3 at a concert at Avalon Hollywood to perform their duet, "My First Kiss". She later made her official stage debut at that year's Lollapalooza as part of the BMI Stage. Her debut single, "Tik Tok", was released digitally on August 7 and was sent to U.S. radio on October 5, 2009. By then, Ke$ha had co-written the title song for Miley Cyrus' The Time of Our Lives EP, made appearances on Pitbull and Taio Cruz's albums, and appeared on the cover on Women's Wear Daily.

Ke$ha later supported Calvin Harris on tour in the UK and toured with Mickey Avalon in the US. She also performed at Madison Square Garden on December 11, 2009 for the Z100 Jingle Ball. It's also been announced that she will be one of the acts for the 2010 revival of Lilith Fair.

Ke$ha described her dress sense as "garbage-chic" to Entertainment Weekly and named Keith Richards as her fashion inspiration. She told Vibe that comfort was most important to her with her fashion choices. She has been noted for her party girl image and told the Herald Sun that "whether people like me or not I just don't care." She went on to say that she was on a one-woman war against pretension and that she felt people cared too much about how they appeared.

Chart Success

Right out of the box Ke$ha has had huge success on the music charts. Her debut single, "TiK ToK", was released in August 2009 and reached #1 in eleven countries and set the female weekly download record in the United States as it was downloaded 610,000 times in the seven days following Christmas 2009. The song stayed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for nine consecutive weeks. Her second single "Blah Blah Blah" peaked at #7, her third single "Your Love is My Drug" made it to #4, and her fourth single "Take It Off" hit #8 on the Hot 100.

Her debut album “Animal” entered the Billboard Top 200 album chart at #1 after selling 152,000 copies in its first week in the United States (knocking Susan Boyle out of the top spot in the process). That feat made Ke$ha just the 12th woman in history to send both her debut single and album to #1 on the Billboard charts.

On the radio Ke$ha also made chart history for logging the most weekly plays in history, registering 11,224 plays for “Tik Tok” during the week of January 18-24 2010, according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. This broke the record set by, Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" just one week earlier.

In November 2010 Ke$ha's first single, "We R Who We R," from her second album, "Cannibal," became just the 17th song to debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Blow," her second single from that album, peaked at #7.
