Introduction
The former Miss Teen USA and love interest of Kirk Cameron in the often uncomfortable sitcom “Growing Pains,” may not be known by most by her name, but is definitely recognized by her striking hot face.
Life Story
Hu was born in Honolulu Hawaii to Juanita and Herbert Hu. The couple soon divorced and Kelly looked to her older brother for guidance. In turn, her brother noticed her interest in martial arts and began schedule fights between her and several neighborhood boys. Unfortunately for her, the women’s UFC was still twenty five years from it’s start, so she was forced to go into modeling. In 1985 she won Miss Teen USA, becoming the first Asian American to do so. From there her career skyrocketed, as she began doing ads for Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese, the most coveted of the cream cheeses. Surprisingly though, Hu strived for more.
In 1987 she won the role of Kirk Cameron’s love interest in the popular sitcom “Growing Pains.” She parlayed that role into roles on series such as “Night Court,” and “21 Jump Street.” Each time, playing the role of the impressionable hot chick with the sweet persona. That all changed when in 1995 she starred in the action film No Way Back, the film was a flop and the title proved to be unfortunate, as film critics made jokes such as “No way to get your money back.” Despite the films lack of success, Kelly was now seen as a viable action star and earned roles in the show “Nash Bridges,” playing a tough-as-nails police officer who finds Don Johnson irresistible. It was the toughest role of her life.
In 2002 she was back in action movies, starring in “The Scorpion King,” and “Cradle 2 the Grave.” As she’s gotten a little longer in the tooth, acting roles have dried up a bit, and in 2007 she took a role the television show “In Case of Emergency,” where she plays a woman who accidentally reunites with her high school classmates, only to realize none of them grew up according to plan. Hilarity did not ensue.
Today Hu is very active in CAUSE USA, a group which encourages Asian Americans to join in the democratic process. She’s currently dating music producer and former SR-71 front man Mitch Allan.
