Miki Fujimoto (born February 26, 1985 in Hokkaido, Japan) is a Japanese singer and former member of Morning Musume. Fujimoto was famously known as a bitchy diva, but this attitude in fact gained her a large fanbase that often chanted her name at concerts.
Fujimoto left the group in 2007 in a situation similar to that of Mari Yaguchi. Unlike Yaguchi, however, she has been allowed to return to releasing singles.
Miki Fujimoto Career
Fujimoto initially auditioned for Morning Musume's fourth generation in 2000, but was not selected. However, the agency picked her up and she debuted as a solo act. Her sales, though, were disappointing. She was placed into a unit called Gomattou with fellow soloists Aya Matsuura and Maki Goto to promote her debut album in 2002, which contained her fans' anthem, "Romantic Ukare Mode." However, she was wildly outsold by her "rival", Matsuura. (The two are in fact best friends.)
In 2003, seeing that a solo career would not work out, Fujimoto was placed into the group she had originally wanted to join, Morning Musume, as a member of the sixth generation. Mikitty, though, was not pleased at her demotion from solo artist to one voice in a chorus of then fifteen girls. She adopted a sour and bitter attitude, which ironically only increased her popularity. She led many of the group's songs alongside the regular leads such as Ai Takahashi and Rika Ishikawa.
Morning Musume was split in half in 2003: Otomegumi and Sakuragumi. Fujimoto was part of Otomegumi, and was the lead vocalist on both of their singles until they went on hiatus in 2004.
After leader Mari Yaguchi left in 2005, Fujimoto became sub-leader to Hitomi Yoshizawa. This shocked many fans, who expected fifth generation veteran Takahashi to become sub-leader.
In 2006, Fujimoto and Matsuura formed a duo called GAM (Great Aya & Miki). Because "gam" is slang for "attractive legs" in English, the two wore very short skirts in their promotional pictures, performances, and videos. The two released a controversial video called "Melodies" in late 2006. Its controversy stemmed from the kiss the two shared at the very end of the video. Their Western fanbase, though, was thrilled, calling them the Japanase t.A.T.u.
In 2007, Yoshizawa graduated from Morning Musume, leaving it in Fujimoto's hands with Takahashi as her sub-leader. However, Fujimoto was caught with her boyfriend only 20-odd days later. She resigned from Morning Musume on June 1, making her the Morning Musume leader with the shortest tenure as such, with only 25 days under her belt. Because of this infraction of idol rules (dating is taboo), Fujimoto was suspended, bringing her activities with GAM to a halt. Even now, the status of the duo is unknown. She also was barred from performing at the Hello! Project summer and winter tours in 2007 and 2008.
In February 2008, a new solo single for Mikitty was announced, bringing back hope that she will get her solo career back.
