Natalia Vodianova's childhood was far from a pleasant one. Born in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), Russia, she grew up very poor. By the time she was 11 she was helping her mother operate a fruit stand. With the money she earned from her fruit stand she was able to care for her sister who is an invalid and get her away from her abusive step father.

Career

She enrolled in a modeling academy where she was told that if she learned English it would help her career. Three months later she was clost to fluent. At 17 she moved to Paris and became the face of Gucci perfume. Eventually she was walking the runway for top designers and gracing the covers of fashion magazines around the globe. She is best known as the face of Calvin Klein.

According to Forbes, Vodianova is ranked as the seventh highest-earning model in the world after Carolyn Murphy, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen. Her earnings for the past year were in the order of $4.5 million.
