Introduction
Pavlína Pořízková is another hot, hot refugee from the Czech Republic. Her parents fled to Sweden when she was a toddler, leaving her in the care of her grandmother. When they later tried to take her out of the Czeckoslovakia, authorities intervened. She received a ton of media attention and became a sort of Czech Elian Gonzales. Finally, Swedish politician Olof Palme put pressure on the Czechoslovakian government, and the Porizkova family was reunited after seven years.
Life Story
Pořízková is the supermodel who pretty much paved the way for every other famous supermodel. Her trademark, other than the oft-hidden enormous gap between her front teeth, was her "dreamy look," which she claims came from her squinting at the camera because of her extreme nearsightedness. The gap was later fixed.
Porizkova has done a slew of modeling for pretty much every top list publication, including Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue (she was the cover girl in 1984 and 1985), ELLE, Cosmopolitan, and Harpers Bazaar. In 1988 she signed a long term contract to become the face of Estée Lauder. She has also posed nude for Playboy.
She married Ric Ocasek, the lead singer of The Cars in 1989. After bearing her first baby in 1993, she devoted less and less time to modeling, and she moved into acting in independent films. She soon got a new contract as the lead model for Escada. In early 2001, she was the hostess for a television show on the E! network's Style Channel. In 2005, she made her first appearance in the noted Victoria's Secret catalogue.
In 2007, she was a contestant on Season 4 of the favorite TV show of Grandmothers across the United States, "Dancing with the Stars." She was the first contestant eliminated that season. Apparently all of the grandmothers wanted to see more dancing from Billy Ray Cyrus and Cliff Claven from "Cheers" instead of Paulina.
Most recently, Paulina served as a judge on "America's Next Top Model" for seasons 10 thru 12 but was axed after season 12 wrapped due to what Tyra Banks called "budget cuts."
Oh, she and Ocasek are still married after 20 years, which qualifies them for the Celebrity Marriage Hall of Fame.
