Rooney Mara is an actress and the younger sister of actress Kate Mara, with whom she is frequently confused in photo captions.

Rooney is more slightly built than her sister, and has green eyes while Kate's are brown. They come from notable American business and football families on both sides, founders of the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rooney made her first acting appearance in the 2005 film Urban Legands: Bloody Mary. She had a starring role in another horror movie, the remake of the 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street. But Rooney's breakthrough role was a smaller part, playing Mark Zuckerberg's (fictitious) girlfriend in The Social Network.

That film's director, David Fincher, then cast Rooney in the entirely unnecessary Hollywood remake of the Swedish hit, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from Steig Larsson's Millennium Trilogy. The softly pretty Mara went to great measures to transform herself into scrawny, disaffected heroine Lisbeth Salander, losing weight, getting a nipple pierced and chopping her hair.

But publicity for the film caused a negative stir. At Fincher's urging, Mara was photographed with her hands dripping "blood," apparently for all the people Lisbeth could kill but doesn't. For a story about violence against women, posters showed Rooney topless while Daniel Craig, who plays the oversexed hero, remained clothed.

That was followed by a creepy profile in Vanity Fair, which left a strong impression that Fincher was playing Svengali to the young actress, and not necessarily in her best interests.

One portion of the article described a dinner with them, saying. “When a waiter appears to take our order, we are all looking at our menus, but I see out of the corner of my eye Fincher nudging Mara. He says with quiet seriousness, ‘You can eat.’ I look up to see her reaction. Mara rolls her eyes, and Fincher laughs. ‘You can have lettuce and a grape. A raisin if you must.’ She orders a piece of fish and barely touches it.”

While Rooney described herself as looking "like a child" in the movie, she denied she had gotten unhealthily skinny. But she also described Fincher telling her to "get really drunk" for a photo session," ‘and I did it!’ says Mara. ‘Threw up all night!’”

Still, Rooney has shown good judgment off screen, putting her wealthy background to use to start a charity, Faces of Kibera, that works with orphans in a slum in Nairobi, Kenya.
