Sandra Oh Introduction

Sandra Oh plays a very close second to Hollywood Asian-American female powerhouse Lucy Liu, yet Sandra has been drawn to more indie fare. She was voted by Maxim magazine one of the worlds top 50 unsexiest women alive. Ouch.

Sandra Oh Life Story

Sandra Oh cut her teeth in the cute, non-threatening and obscure little world of Canadian Television. She turned down a full scholarship to Journalism School at Carleton College, freaking out her Korean immigrant parents. Their fears were later well founded after her portrayal of a stripper in Dancing at the Blue Iguana, which involved numerous nude scenes. After completing her degree from the National Theatre School of Canada, Oh starred in an Ontario production of David Mamet’s Oleander. Her break through role was as the lead in The Diary of Evelyn Lau, the biopic about a Chinese woman who went against the wishes of her parents to pursue an artistic lifestyle. Sound familiar?

Americans know her for a number of things, the least of which is her role as Robert Wuhl’s personal assistant in the HBO series Arli$$. Her cinema career was resuscitated by her involvement in both Under the Tuscan Sun, playing a lesbian woman, and everyone’s favorite comedy about Pinot Noir addiction, Sideways. More recently, Oh increased her stock price as Dr. Cristina Yang in the ABC hit Grey’s Anatomy.

Luckily for her parents, Oh’s siblings made up for her obvious shortcomings. Her brother, Ray, completed his Ph.D. in medical genetics at the University of Toronto. Her sister Grace is an attorney.

In 2008, she got an Emmy nomination in the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category for her work on "Grey's Anatomy".
