Sharon Helga Corr (born March 24, 1970 in Dundalk, Ireland) is a musician and member of the Irish pop-rock band The Corrs. She plays the violin, piano and sings backing vocals.
Sharon Corr began learning the violin when she was 6 years old. Her sister, Caroline Corr, was originally meant to learn it but was not interested, so Sharon began learning it instead. Their parents were performers in their spare time and often took the children along. Sharon has played in an orchestra and is qualified to teach the violin. As a teenager, Sharon told the Daily Mail that she breezed through a music exam, but a nun who saw her quickly leaving told her, in nun fashion, she would never amount to anything.
Sharon began performing with her elder brother Jim, who plays guitar. Their younger siblings initially were less interested, but Caroline took up drums as a teenager and Andrea eventually began playing the tin whistle. The four formed a group and began achieving notice while playing traditional Celtic folk music.
They also had small roles in The Commitments, with Andrea landing a minor speaking part. They began reaching wider audience as they brought in rock and pop elements. Still, it was a hard slog at times. Sharon told the Mail their worst gig was when they went to London and played a showcase gig at MI5 building the day after an IRA bombing. The few people who did turn up were largely drunk, and as the group left the stage, "a man was sick on my head and down my back," Sharon said.
But the group soon gained acclaim, playing at the FIFA World Cup in Boston, and then at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Following that, they were added as a supporting act on Celine Dion's worldwide "Falling into You" Tour.
Sharon's fiddle work helped the Corrs establish themselves as something different than just another pop group. Sharon also wrote hit singles such as "Runaway," " So Young," "Radio," "Long Night" and "Goodbye" which helped the band establish success within the music industry.
In 2001, she married Belfast barrister Gavin Bonnar. They met when Sharon was shooting the video of Runaway, the group's very first single. They welcomed their first child, a boy named Cathal Robert Gerard Bonnar, on March 31, 2006. Sharon gave birth to their second child, a girl, Flori Jean Elizabeth Bonnar on the 18th of July 2007.
The Corr siblings were awarded honorary MBEs in 2005 by Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of their musical talents and also their charitable work, which has raised money for Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, victims of the Omagh Bombing and other charities.
The Corrs went on hiatus in 2008, although lead singer Andrea released a solo album to mixed results. In 2010, Sharon released her own solo effort, Dream of You, and has been touring in support of it. She sings lead throughout, and the songs often rely on her violin in place of the usual guitar solos.
Sharon Corr Trivia
At 5'5", Sharon is the tallest of the three sisters, and the second tallest of the four siblings, after her elder brother Jim Corr. With her slight build, 31 A/B, Sharon sometimes goes braless on stage. On occasion, she also colours her hair, which is naturally chestnut brown.
As well as No Frontiers with Caroline, Sharon sings Dimming of the Day and her own version of Goodbye.
In 1999 she recorded violin parts for the Jean Michel Jarre track "Rendez-vous à Paris", which was released in 2000 on the album Metamorphoses. Sharon Corr then performed the track at the Man Ray club in Paris along with Jarre and other musicians in January 2000, to promote the album to media and celebrities.
She also recorded two tracks in 2008 with operatic singer Bryn Terfyl.
Sharon has often won praise for her mix of casual chic and glamour, but not every outfit has been a success. A leopard-patterned catsuit worn at a performance in Spain gets her vote for the worst, although she recently appeared at Ladies Day at the Dublin Horse Show with what appeared to be a blackthorn bush in place of a hat.
