Sophie Okonedo is an Academy Award-nominated actress in theater, films and television.
Half Jewish, half Nigerian, she was born in London, Henry and Joan Okonedo. She was raised Jewish by her mother. Her father left the family when she was 5 years old.
She dropped out of school at age 16, but she eventually enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
One of her early film roles, as the Wachati Princess in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995), earned her a nomination for Best Kiss from the MTV Movie Awards for her lip lock with Jim Carrey.
She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Hotel Rwanda. She was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Dirty Pretty Things. And she received a Golden Globe nomination for Lead Actress in a Miniseries for her work in HBO's Tsunami: The Aftermath.
Okonedo has a daughter, Aoife, from a past relationship with Irish film editor Eoin Martin.
