Yuna

Yuna is the female protagonist of Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2. She is the daughter of High Summoner Braska and an unnamed Al Bhed woman, who died when Sin attacked her ship at sea. The Al Bhed woman was the sister of Cid, who is the father of Rikku and Brother, meaning that they are Yuna's cousins. A unique trait of Yuna is her heterochromia, her eyes being two different colors. Her left eye is blue, while the right is a green Al Bhed eye, showing her half-Al Bhed heritage.

Final Fantasy X

Braska raised Yuna on his own in Bevelle. When Yuna was around the age of seven, Braska resolved to become a Summoner, and do his best to defeat Sin and ease Spira's suffering. He enlisted a fallen monk named Auron and Jecht, a man who suddenly appeared in Spira, as his Guardians. Braska began his pilgrimage to the temples of Spira to obtain the Final Aeon. While on the island of Besaid, he asked Auron to take Yuna to Besaid so she may have a peaceful childhood.

However, when the pilgrimage ends, Auron is wounded by Yunalesca, he then literally crawls down Mt. Gagazet. Auron makes it as far as the outskirts of Bevelle before his strength abandons him. Before dying, he places his mission upon a Ronso named Kimahri.

Kimahri then travels to Bevelle, where he meets Yuna and takes her to Besaid; though Kimahri initially attempted to take his leave afterwards, Yuna pleaded with him to stay, and he complied. At Besaid, she becomes close friends with Lulu and Wakka - in fact, the relationship is referred to as Yuna being a younger sister to the pair. Eventually, she decides to become a summoner, and refuses to allow Lulu and Wakka to change her mind. She, Lulu and Kimahri travel through the Besaid Cloister of Trials. Once there, she begins praying to the fayth to allow her to become a summoner.

A day later, she leaves the fayth as a summoner, only to find Wakka and another man (named Tidus) in the room. She then completes her training by summoning the Aeon Valefor. She then begins a trip to Kilika with Wakka, Lulu, Kimahri and Tidus. Thanks to her own encounters with Jecht, she is the only person who believes right off the bat that Tidus actually comes from Zanarkand (other than Rikku and Auron, who was the one that brought Tidus from there).

At Kilika, she obtains the Aeon Ifrit, and then the group leaves for Luca.

At Luca, Yuna hears a rumor that her father's guardian, Auron, is somewhere in Luca. She begins a search with Kimahri and Tidus just before the opening Blitzball match. Kimahri ends up in a fight with two other Ronso and during that time, Yuna is kidnapped by the Al Bhed in hopes of making the Besaid Aurochs lose to them. However, Tidus, Kimahri and Lulu manage to rescue Yuna, while the Besaid Aurochs win their first match in 10 years.

While traveling towards Djose Temple, Yuna is caught up in Operation Mi'ihen, where she meets Maester Seymour Guado, and witnesses Sin kill most of the Crusaders. Upon reaching Djose Temple, it is confirmed that she has chosen Tidus to be her guardian, and she also receives the aeon Ixion.

On the Moonflow, she is yet again kidnapped by the Al Bhed. This time, the machine is underwater, so Tidus and Wakka go down to rescue her. The group later realizes the pilot of the machine was really Rikku, who becomes Yuna's final guardian.

At Guadosalam, Seymour proposes to Yuna, then tells her to meet him at Macalania Temple to give him her answer. However Yuna learns that Seymour had killed his father in order to become a Maester and upon reaching Macalania, engages him in battle, and the group end up defeating Seymour.

Yuna and the group then escape, only for them to be trapped under the ice. Yuna is then kidnapped by the Al Bhed on Bikanel Island and taken to their home. However, the Guado attack and take Yuna to Bevelle, where she is to be wed to Seymour.

She is forced into marriage to save her friends, but, when Seymour decides to have Tidus, Auron, Kimahri, Wakka, Lulu, and Rikku killed anyway, Yuna threatens to commit suicide by jumping off the church unless he frees them; when Seymour tells her that the idea is foolish, she merely wipes his kiss off of her lips with great disgust, and then proceeds to jump, only to be saved by Valefor. She then escapes to the Bevelle Fayth, where she receives Bahamut. However, the group is caught and she is tried for murder and treason. She manages to escape her execution into Macalania Woods with her guardians in tow.

Her faith in Yevon shaken, Yuna goes off to the spring to be alone with Kimahri in tow. Tidus goes after her, a mutual agreement between himself and the others, and, now knowing the truth behind the Final Summoning, apologizes for his eagerness to defeat Sin and filling her with hopes that they would be able to see his Zanarkand, believing that he had only stressed her out by doing so. However, Yuna assures him that he had in fact made her happy, and Tidus attempts to convince her to quit her pilgrimage and stay with him. While Yuna considers it at first, her sense of duty to the rest of Spira is too great, and she resolves to go on. They kiss and share a moonlit tryst in the spring, and Tidus assures her that he will always remain by her side no matter what.

Yuna then travels to Zanarkand, where she defies what the other summoners have done and kills Yunalesca, so as not to sacrifice one of her guardians to be the Final Aeon for her. The group then hatch a plan to engage Sin head-on and venture inside to defeat the monster at its core, Yu Yevon. Yuna uses all the Aeons she has obtained and manages to break the cycle and defeat Sin once and for all, becoming the High Summoner of the Eternal Calm.

However, the destruction of Sin and Yu Yevon comes at a heavy price: the death of Tidus, a product of the Dream Zanarkand created by Yu Yevon. After a tearful farewell, Yuna tells Tidus that she loves him (but simply thanks him in the Japanese version) and, after embracing Yuna, Tidus jumps off the deck of the airship and enters the Farplane.

Though deeply saddened by Tidus's death, Yuna informs the rest of Spira that she will aid in the reconstruction of the planet now that Sin is no more. She gave in one last speech saying, "The people and the friends that we have lost... or the dreams that faded... never forget them."

Final Fantasy X-2

Two years have passed since Yuna defeated Sin. Back on Besaid Island, her quiet life is shattered when she is contacted by Rikku, who has a gift from Kimahri - a sphere he found, which shows a man who bears a striking likeness to Tidus, her love who disappeared after the defeat of Sin.

Yuna joins the Gullwings, a group of sphere hunters made up of four Al Bhed (Brother, Buddy, Shinra and Rikku) and a woman named Paine. Together they search for spheres of the past.

Just before the events of Final Fantasy X-2, Yuna's Garment Grid is taken from her by a group called the LeBlanc Syndicate. Using her garment grid, the leader, LeBlanc, is pretending to be Yuna. Rikku and Paine enter the concert held by the fake Yuna in hopes to get Yuna's grid back. Yuna is left in Luca wearing the Mascot dressphere, where she pretends to not be "Lady" Yuna.

After getting her grid back, the group begins the search for spheres, which may contain more clues of the man in the sphere.

At the end of Chapter 1, Yuna goes to Kilika Island, where the group stole a sphere, and obtain a sphere. The sphere details events which the Gullwings wish they didn't have. However, they see 'him' in the sphere, who talks about a songstress called Lenne. The group decides to either give the sphere to the Youth League or New Yevon. The player makes this choice, which affects the Gullwings' interactions with the two groups for the rest of the game.

Towards the end of Chapter 2, Yuna, Rikku, Paine, Leblanc, Logos, and Ormi enter Bevelle, and manage to get down through where the old fayth used to be, into an underground section where the original sphere was found. Towards the end of the dungeon, the group must fight Baralai; the leader of New Yevon, regardless of whether or not the player gave the sphere to him. However, they beat him and enter the Vegnagun chamber, only to find Vegnagun gone, and a twisted Bahamut in its place. This is the first of the Dark Aeons.

At the end of Chapter 3, the group has visited Besaid Temple to rid them of Valefor and Kilika to beat Ifrit. They then go to Djose Temple, where they defeat Ixion. When they enter the chamber of the fayth, Ixion walks in, and explodes, knocking Yuna into the Farplane, where she sees 'him', who turns out to be Shuyin. Although it wasn't Tidus, Yuna was able to see him when she was trapped alone in the Farplane and heard his whistle. Upon seeing him, she tried to catch up to him. Thanks to Tidus, Yuna was able to find herself back in Spira.

In Chapter 4, Yuna starts a concert on the Thunder Plains, where she wears the Songstress dressphere. As part of the concert, Shinra creates a sphere-screen so that people at the back can see. However, the songstress dressphere has an effect on the sphere, and people end up seeing images of Lenne and Shuyin in front of Vegnagun. Shinra then reveals that the person trapped inside the songstress dressphere is actually Lenne.

In Chapter 5, the group travels into the depths of the Farplane, where they encounter Vegnagun. They defeat it, only for them to be attacked by Shuyin. They trick him into thinking that Yuna is Lenne, but then his vision clears and he sees Yuna instead of Lenne. They beat him, and Lenne encourages him to return to the Farplane.

While then crossing the Farplane, Yuna is encountered by the little boy who was the fayth of Bahamut. He asks Yuna if she wants another moment with "him", to which Yuna agrees and the fayth find Tidus' pyreflies and restore him to life. Achieving the Good or Perfect Ending in the game results in Tidus' return being permanent as long as Yuna loves him and the fayth can maintain his existence.

Three months after the events of Final Fantasy X-2, the Gullwings are called back together, to Yadonoki Tower. Here, they travel to the top of the tower, where they find a broken Machina. Paine reveals she was the one who brought them back together, to show them that even though they are now apart, they shall always be together.

Personality

Yuna undergoes some radical changes in character and behavior over the course of the games, but at her core she is a very kind-hearted, loyal, honest and polite young woman who strives to see the best in others and has a very strong conviction to complete whatever task she feels is her duty to perform.

At the beginning of the game she was a firm follower of Yevon's teachings and often came across as quite naive, believing that her duty to Spira's people and responsibility as a summoner was to defeat Sin. Described by Auron as serious to a fault, she would often hide her own feelings of fear, sadness, and desperation while encouraging others to express themselves in her place. She often seemed quite willing to carry others' burdens to ease their own pain, and was willing to sacrifice her own life to destroy Sin and give up chances for her own happiness if it meant it could help others. However, her contact with - and ever growing love for Tidus caused her to begin questioning some of Yevon's teachings and became increasingly more direct and open.

When she learned of the hypocrisy in Yevon's upper levels, her Yevonite faith was profoundly shaken, but she resolved to continue her pilgrimage despite Tidus and Rikku's protests. When finally confronted with the truth of the Final Summoning and the "spiral of death" the summoner's pilgrimage ensured, her trust in Yevon was finally shattered. She refused to sacrifice one of her guardians to Yunalesca, and resolved to destroy Sin permanently without the "false hope" of the Final Aeon. After the painful sacrifice of her Aeons to destroy Yu Yevon and bring about an Eternal Calm, she was deeply saddened by Tidus' departure, and proclaimed her love for him before he disappeared.

In the sequel, Yuna had undergone a complete makeover with a more revealing dress style and a new lease of life, being now freed from her former responsibilities as a summoner. Though still unflinchingly polite, soft spoken and driven, she was more worldly-wise, quite playful, and had learned to think and desire for herself. During her time with the Gullwings, Rikku served as a sort-of role model for her, as Yuna displays some of Rikku's eccentric behaviors and even uses some of Rikku's expressions, such as "disasteriffic" ad "oh, poopie!"; in fact, when she says the latter when Leblanc breaks into their airship, Rikku orders her not to talk like that, and Yuna objects, "I'm just copying you!" Though her friends would occasionally tease her as a pushover due to her inability to refuse a call for help, she could be quite stern and even intimidating if actually angered. She had also developed a strong dislike of sacrifice in the name of victory, a trait Tidus had instilled in her. Her love for Tidus served as her primary motivation, and following the game's conclusion she was happily reunited with him.
