How to Make It

Add the whiskey, vermouth, bitters, and a tablespoon of the cherry jus to a mixing glass with ice. Stir (don’t shake!), then divide it between two cocktail glasses. Garnish each with a cherry and enjoy.

Why We Like It

I need no excuse to drink rye whiskey. But if you need a justification for doing such a thing, a chill in the air is it. Let the people have their pumpkin spice lattes while we warm up with The Perfect Manhattan, a simple, classic cocktail served up. This Manhattan is made with a tablespoon of jus (or juice) from the whiskey-soaked cherries my husband and I have in our fridge pretty much all the time — which is why we call it The Perfect Manhattan. If you don’t have that on hand, you could use a teaspoon the old standby: maraschino cherry juice. To be honest, though, that stuff is so cloyingly sweet, you’re better off just omitting the cherry part all together.
