How to Make It

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with a handful of ice. Stir and strain into an old-fashioned glass. Add one large ice cube, garnish with the orange peel.

Why We Like It

When you think Merle Haggard, two of the first things that may come to mind are whiskey and his popular song, “Okie From Muskogee.” The former was one of his favorites and the latter was written as a conservative anthem in reaction to the hippies protesting the Vietnam War. Later in life, Haggard changed his tune politically, and even wrote a song called “Hillary”—featuring the line “Change needs to be large, let’s put a woman in charge”—when then Senator Clinton was running against Barack Obama in the Democratic primary.

This cocktail, the Haggard Hippie, pays homage to the late Merle Haggard’s whiskey-slinging songs and his lighter side. It’s made with whiskey, black tea (I used Constant Comment for a hint of spice) and something sweet, with hints of orange. Flavorwise, it exists somewhere between a Toddy and an Old Fashioned.
