Why We Like It

Today, we say goodbye to legendary blues musician B.B. King, who died peacefully in his sleep at 89 years old. According to interviews, King himself wasn’t much of a drinker — at least later in life — and he and his band abided by “the old code” of no drinking or smoking on stage. Still, it just feels right to toast his long, influential life with a cocktail inspired by my favorite B.B. King song, “Hummingbird,” from Indianola Mississippi Seeds. Written by Leon Russell, the lyrics seem especially poignant today:

Sometimes I get impatient / but she cools me without words / and she comes so sweet and softly / my hummingbird / and have you heard / that I thought my life had ended / but I find that it's just begun / cause she gets me where I live / I'll give all I have to give / I'm talking about that hummingbird.

So, tonight, put on your favorite B.B. King album, mix up the cool, sweet little Hummingbird cocktail, and toast to the man who gave us so much great music.
