How to Make It

Carefully char the edges of the orange twist with a lighter and set aside. Add the sugar and bitters to the bottom of a double rocks glass, then muddle them together with the end of a wooden spoon. Cover the top of the glass with plastic wrap, then insert the spout of the smoke gun under the wrap. Smoke the sugar and bitters for 30 seconds then leave the plastic wrap on for another 60 to 120 seconds so the sugar fully absorbs the smoke flavor. Add the whiskey and stir well (until the sugar is dissolved, at least 30 seconds), then top it off with a handful of ice. Twist the orange peel to release its oils, garnish and enjoy.

Why We Like It

This Father’s Day, toast the men who matter most with The Old Man, a smoky take on the classic Old Fashioned cocktail. For this super-fun recipe, you get to use a smoke gun to infuse the smoky flavor in the sugar and bitters. Alternatively, you could use a drop of liquid smoke, but that’s way less cool. Plus, a smoke gun and a bottle of rye make for a pretty great Father’s Day gift.

Bonus: Here’s a little video from Feed Me Creative that shows just how cool and fun this drink is to make. Dad will be proud.
