Watch this video of Aly Raisman accepting a double-date invitation from Oakland Raiders tight end Colton Underwood. Go ahead, I’ll wait here.

Done?

See that look she gave? Here’s what it says: “There are cameras on me, and he’s kinda cute, so I guess I’ll accept, but this is weird.”

Doing things Underwood style may be a fun publicity stunt and will get you some headlines, but when you show up for that date, the first thing she’s going to say is, “You should’ve asked me in person.”

That is, if she shows up for the date. I’ll get to that in a moment.

See that look she gave? Here’s what it says: “There are cameras on me, and he’s kinda cute, so I guess I’ll accept, but this is weird.”

But first, the date itself. So let’s say they do decide to go on one. In this case, it will be a double date with Andrew East and 2008 Summer Olympics gold medalist Shawn Johnson. That’s because Shawn Johnson knows Aly Raisman, and that’s how Colton Underwood got the opportunity to ask her. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using your connections to meet a lady, but suggesting a double date makes things weird.

Let’s imagine the date for a moment, if you will. Shawn and Aly will want to chat. Colton and Andrew will want to chat—they play football together, after all. Sure, this all sounds comforting: People you know and trust, helping the conversation along, quelling whatever insecurities you may have on a first date.

But first dates should be nerve-racking. They should feel uncomfortable. They should test your chemistry, wit and intellect. They should inform future dates (if there should be any at all).

Instead, it’ll be a weird affair that will most likely be covered my media who will all be expecting results. It’ll be an awkward pressure cooker.

Which leads us to the other question, if there will be a date at all. My prediction is that there will not be one. I think Aly, after spending three weeks being nice in front of cameras, was just doing one final act of “give ’em what they want.” In truth, she’s probably thinking, “Dude. If you want to ask me out, just do it. Don’t make it weird like this.”

And the same goes for all you creepers trying to get all up in a lady’s DMs. Just TALK to girls. Please.
