The second film in Peter Jackson’s second J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy was, originally, supposed to have been it. Plans changed, however, when Jackson and his team decided to turn The Hobbit into a three-part adaptation rather than a two-part film. Thus was born The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and it gets everything in motion for what is sure to be a thrilling conclusion when The Hobbit: There and Back Again opens in December 2014. It improves upon what Jackson did in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by virtue of the fact that there’s less world building and fewer new characters to introduce, so the story can really get going right from the jump. If you missed it in theaters, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug arrives on Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD on April 8.

We’re premiering this exclusive bonus features clip from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Blu-ray. The clip features Mikael Persbrandt, who plays Beorn in the film, discussing his role as the shapeshifter. There’s also a look inside the makeup room, where Beorn’s wig and prosthetic nose are applied while hair-and-makeup designer Peter Swords King explains how they decided on the particular look that the character would have and the challenges it presented. It’s a cool peek behind the scenes at how one of the film’s more interesting characters came to life.
