People have always told you that beauty is skin deep and a great personality outranks it all. Yeah, those people have been lying to you. According to a new study, women care more about your hot looks than your sweet personality.

The study, which was published in the journal of Evolutionary Psychological Science, found that women tend to weigh physical attractiveness more heavily than personality traits when considering a new partner. Even their mothers did so when choosing a suitable partner for their daughters.

Researchers took a group of 80 women between the ages of 15 and 29, along with 61 of their mothers, and showed them three different possible future partners. The men were ranked differently on their perceived attractiveness and each had a distinct personality profile. Those with good personality traits only scored higher than their competition when they were considered to be “moderately attractive,” which suggests that a man needs to be at least somewhat good looking before his personality is even a contender.

The women’s mothers weren’t as picky and didn’t select men solely on their physical attractiveness. They wanted to make sure they were picking trustworthy and dependable matches for their daughters, too, but the more attractive men still faired better.

The study’s author, Madeleine Fugére of Eastern Connecticut State University, concluded “that a minimum level of physical attractiveness is a necessity for both women and their mothers.”

In other words, you gotta have it all. And step up the charm if you get far enough to meet her mom.
