Biting may now be the most-talked-about move in soccer after Uruguay’s Luis Suarez bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during a World Cup match earlier this week. In honor of The Bite Heard Round the World, I’ve mixed up three of my favorite ingredients, which all happen to have quite a bit of bite to them: bourbon, bitters, and ginger. A bit of honey brings balance.

What gives the Bitter Biter so much bite is that instead of just a few drops, it gets an entire ounce of bitters. It also calls for an ounce of fresh ginger juice, which I make in my juicer. If you don’t have a juicer, you can pulverize ginger in a food processor to liquify it (just be sure to strain it before adding it to the drink). Ginger liqueur is also a good substitute, but if you use that, leave out the honey.

This is definitely a sipping cocktail, so take your time with it. I promise it tastes a lot better than a sweaty soccer player’s shoulder.

The Bitter Biter

2 ounces bourbon
1 ounce bitters
1 ounce fresh ginger juice
½ teaspoon honey

Glassware: Rocks glass

Method: Add the bourbon, bitters, ginger juice, and honey to the glass (they should all be at room temperature). Stir stir until the honey is incorporated, then add a large ice cube or handful of ice. Enjoy.
