Blueberries are everywhere around the Fourth of July. Instead of having them on a cake — or worse, a cloyingly sweet pie — I prefer to pair these bountiful American-grown berries with booze and bubbles.

This Bubbly Blueberry Smash cocktail is a refreshing take on the classic blueberry smash, a summertime cocktail that requires you to actually smash (otherwise known as mashing or muddling) blueberries in the bottom of the glass. You might even get away with counting this as a serving of fruit this weekend, as long as you actually eat the berries when you’re done drinking it.

This drink is well balanced, but not so strong you can’t sip a few over the course of Independence Day. And if you or your partygoers prefer a sweeter version, you can substitute Sprite or 7-Up for the club soda. Better yet, give them the pie and keep this for yourself.

Bubbly Blueberry Smash

5-10 mint leaves (plus 1-2 springs for garnish)
1 slice lemon
1 slice lime
1 small handful fresh blueberries
1 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
2 ounces vodka
Club soda
Ice

Glassware: Rocks or stemless wine glass.

Method: Layer the mint leaves, lemon, lime and blueberries in the glass, then add the Elderflower Liqueur. Muddle together with a muddler or the end of a wooden spoon. Add the vodka, fill the glass with ice, and top off with club soda. Garnish with a few mint sprigs and enjoy.
