Men's Double

The news surrounding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia has been so focused on the threat of attack and the country’s ban on “gay propaganda,” that it’s easy to forget about the actual sporting events.

Instead of letting “them” (the terrorists and homophobes) win, let’s instead celebrate the athletes who are about to slip and slide down icy slopes and stay upright on rinks with a drink worthy of the gold, or at least bronze. The Men’s Double is my take on The Gentleman, a classic cocktail with a past as confusing as Don Draper’s. I’ve seen it made with whiskey and ginger beer, bourbon and club soda, cognac and drambuie, and brandy and creme de menthe.

Since I’ve been snowed in all week, my twist on this confusing classic is made with ingredients I always have on hand: whiskey, ginger beer, limes, and coconut milk. Like Sochi — a humid resort on the eastern shore of the Black Sea — the Men’s Double looks like winter and feels a little tropical.

The Men’s Double
2 ounces whiskey
2 ounces light coconut milk (from a can, not a carton)
½ lime, juiced (save a slice for garnish if you’d like)
Ginger beer

Glassware: Rocks or highball glass

Method: Add the whiskey, coconut milk, and lime juice to the glass. Stir well, fill the glass with ice, then top if off with ginger beer. Stir lightly and enjoy.
