Team USA is really racking up the medals at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, having moved into #1 in the overall medal count. To celebrate, we’re putting a Russian twist — or twizzle, if you will — on the Gold Rush, an American cocktail made with bourbon, lemon juice, and honey syrup.

The Sochi Gold uses Russian vodka (or any, really) in place of bourbon, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, honey syrup, plus a little ginger liqueur. Ginger is a spice often used in Sbiten, a traditional Russian honey-based drink, but if you don’t have ginger liqueur around the house, you could get the same effect by grating a little fresh ginger on top.

The Sochi Gold

2 ounces vodka
1 ounce fresh-squeezed lemon juice
1 ounce honey syrup
½ ounce ginger liqueur and/or ¼ teaspoon freshly-grated ginger

Glassware: Rocks glass

Method: Combine all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker, add a handful of ice, and shake it like you mean it. Strain it into a chilled glass and enjoy.

NOTE: To make the honey syrup, mix one part honey with two parts hot water and stir. You might want to let it cool for a few minutes before making the cocktail, though, or the warmth will melt some of the ice in the shaker and water down the drink.
