Guys, the news is really bumming me out this week. Shootings, flesh-eating bacteria in the Louisiana water supply, that creepy clown who keeps posting pictures of himself all over the Internet. On the bright side, I got the iOS7 update on my phone. I’m still getting used to it — mostly because I’m distracted by the fact that it’s really pink and bubbly (I learned that the new system matches the entire theme to your wallpaper; mine happened to be red).
While I’m not a pink person, I’ll take pink and bubbly over clowns and guns any day. So, this week’s cocktail, featuring Aperol, is just that. But don’t worry; it has whiskey in it, so it’s still super manly. It’s a mashup of different Aperol cocktails recipes I’ve seen around the internet, simplified for making at home (an update, if you will). Plus, it’s super-refreshing, and this is the last Friday Drink Special of summer, so drink up and try not to think about creepy clowns.
2 ounces Aperol
2 ounces rye whiskey
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon simple syrup or agave nectar
Lemon peel for garnish
Glassware: Highball glass (it’s ergonomically pleasing, just like the iPhone)
Method: Pour Aperol, whiskey, lemon juice, and syrup into the glass. Stir gently, fill with ice cubes, and top off with club soda and a dash or three of bitters. Gently stir once more, garnish with the lemon peel, and enjoy.
Note: To make simple syrup combine, equal parts sugar and water on the stove until it reaches a boil. Remove from the heat and allow to cool before using. You can make a big batch of this stuff and it will keep for a really long time in a jar in the fridge.
