When Jimmy Fallon made his Tonight Show debut this week, 11 million people tuned in. If he’s going to maintain those ratings, or anything close, we’re all going to need to stay up a little later on school nights. For me, that means extra coffee in the afternoon and a little hooch to counteract it before bed. Others think warm milk helps them sleep. While I’ve never been a fan of the warm-milk cure (or milk in general), I never turn down a cool, creamy cocktail.
This week’s drink, the Tonight Cap, was inspired by all three — caffeine, booze, and milk — and calls for coffee liqueur, whiskey, and half and half. The science behind it may be way off, but the flavors are spot on. The Tonight Cap is like a whiskey-based White Russian, but not as sweet.
If you want to be really festive, you can use Jim(my) Beam, or even Irish Whiskey (Fallon is of Irish descent), but let’s be honest: right before bed, just about any whiskey will work.
2 ounces whiskey or bourbon
1 ounce half and half
½ ounce coffee liqueur (like Kahlua, or homemade)
Glassware: Rocks glass or other stemless cocktail glass
Method: Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, fill to the top with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and enjoy. Then go to bed.
