I have some strong opinions about the government shutdown. But instead of going on a rant, I decided to make a strong cocktail.
This week, I mixed up a classic vermouth and brandy cocktail, the Washington. And then I effed it all up — in a good way.
The Washington is usually served up, but given the current state of things in our nation’s capital, I decided to serve it on the rocks. And since three ounces of liquor looked pretty sad in my glass, I also doubled the recipe.
Washington on the Rocks
3 ounces dry vermouth
1.5 ounces brandy
1 teaspoon simple syrup
3-4 dashes bitters
Glassware: Rocks glass
Method: Pour all ingredients into the glass, stir gently, fill to the top with ice, turn off the news, and enjoy.
Optional: If you’re a bit wary of Washington right now, add some club soda to dilute it a bit.
