Guys, the news this summer isn’t making my job fun. I mean, I get to mix up cocktails and write about them — and even better, drink them — but I’m really starting to miss the days of excessive twerking and elevator brawls. Instead, one of America’s most beloved comedic voices, Robin Williams, is silent, and I don’t have enough booze on hand to even begin to address what happened in Ferguson, Missouri, this week. Add that to everything on the other side of the world, and the general consensus is: WTF, Summer?
In honor of this insane summer, I’ve mixed up a fruity concoction of whiskey, tonic, and fig, or WTF. It’s inspired by not just this crazy news cycle, but also by what may be my favorite drink of all time: a rhubarb tonic I had at Chicago’s Nightwood restaurant last summer. It’s perfectly boozy, bubbly, and slightly sweet (the way summer should be).
2 ounces whiskey
1 heaping teaspoon fig jam
Glassware: Rocks or stemless wine glass
Method: Add the whiskey and fig jam to a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice. Shake vigorously then strain into the glass. Add one large or several small ice cubes, top off with tonic water and enjoy.
