Union’s first role was a bit part in the popular 1990s sitcom Family Matters. The one with Urkel.

A few years later, Union nabbed her first recurring role as the character Keesha Hamilton on 7th Heaven.

Toward the end of the 1990s, she began scoring parts in notable teenage comedy films, including She’s All That and Ten Things I Hate About You.

The cheerleading flick Bring It On marked her first major role in a film. Union was a cheerleader in real life when she was in eighth grade.

Not just a pretty face, Union graduated with honors from UCLA and later worked as a model to pay off her student loans.

“I have the Samuel L. Jackson mentality of working as much as possible,” Union once said. “I think about [Halle Berry] and [Queen Latifah] and they are the only two black actresses that work consistently. It scares me.”

On her sex symbol status: “I have no problem with that! I’d rather be that than Quasimodo. Or a method actor.”
