Nicknames have been a part of baseball since the days when runners were required to say, “Tally me, sir,” to the umpire when crossing home. With the possible exception of boxing, there’s no other sport where they’re so prominent. Seriously, how many of you honestly knew “Oil Can” Boyd was born Dennis until just now?
