Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto takes it back to the streets of urban India in Trishna, out this week. The film is being billed as a tragic romance, and sounds way more depressing than most of her past projects (except maybe Immortals, which was depressing in the “why am I watching this?” sense). Miss Pinto has some cred both as an actress and a pretty face, though, so we’ll sit through a few sad scenes to watch her in action. Or at least enjoy this bio-gallery, right?
Despite her oddly Hispanic-flavored name, Pinto is from Mumbai.
She was inspired to pursue acting after one of her Bollywood idols, Sushmita Sen, won the Miss Universe pageant in 1994.
One of her first on-screen jobs was hosting the international travel show Full Circle on Zee TV, an India-based TV channel.
Pinto made her film debut with a starring role in Slumdog Millionaire.
Slumdog director Danny Boyle likened his discovery of Pinto to casting then-unknown actress Kelly Macdonald in Trainspotting (we assume that’s a compliment).
The success of Slumdog propelled her to fame and drew more film offers. Her second gig was a role in the Woody Allen film You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger.
Pinto’s next project is a role in the Terrence Malick-directed Knight of Cups alongside Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett. With Portman and Pinto side by side, we might have a difficult time paying attention to the film itself.
