If you’ve been keeping up with the rest of our Grill Spectacular, you’ve no doubt been jonesing to fire up the barbecue and get your smoke on. Whether you're a pitmaster or an amateur, there are a multitude of apps out there that'll take your BBQ to the next level. So put down the tongs and check out our favorites...
Weber Grills: Weber may be the first name in backyard grilling, but a side burner and a set of flavorizer bars doesn't automatically translate into good eats. That's why the Weber Grills app needs to be at your side, with delicious recipes for whatever you're in the mood for, and a set of guides and videos that'll help you tame your turkey and rule your ribs.
Storyque: If you believe a perfectly grilled piece of meat is like a work of art, flipping through the pages of Storyque will be like visiting a charcoal museum. A monthly magazine dedicated to all things smoked, seared and charred, each issue is chock full of tips and techniques to turn you into a professional griller.
The Pit Pal BBQ: Serious outdoor cooks know that getting juicy, flavorful meat is an exact science, and The Pit Pal BBQ will help you figure out the right formula. Like a diary for your cookouts, the app will track everything from the type of meat to the spices in your secret rub, so you'll know what to adjust the next time you fire up the grill. And once you finally nail those fall-off-the-bone ribs, you can snap a picture and immortalize them forever.
Omaha Steaks Steak Time: Even if you aren't ordering succulent steaks from the most delicious mail-order catalog in the country, make sure Omaha Steaks Steak Time is an indispensable piece of your rig. Recipes and how-to videos will teach you how to extract the most flavor from your filets, but the killer feature is the time/temperature tool that alerts you when your steak is cooked just the way you want it.
Grilling From the Dash: There are lots of apps that will give you delicious, easy-to-follow recipes for your 'cue, but Grilling From Dash is the only one we've found that provides a full menu of eclectic dishes to dine on, from mini grilled pizza appetizers to grilled peaches for dessert. And this didn't forget the burgers, either—whether you're into beef, chicken or fish, it's got a patty for every palette.
Grill Time: When you're juggling condiments, mixing salads and trying to entertain your guests simultaneously, it's easy to mix up your meats and end up with overcooked burgers and dry T-bones. GrillTime won't let that happen. Just plug in what you're cooking and how you want it cooked, and the app will tell you exactly when to take it off the heat. And if you're a chronic flipper, it'll help you break that habit.
More Grillin': When your cookout plans fizzle out due to inclement weather, you can still get your fix without burning your kitchen down. More Grillin' lets you choose from a multitude of meats, sauces, toppings and side dishes while you flip your way to a virtual grilled feast. About the only thing it doesn't have is the fresh-from-the-briquettes smell.
The Photo Cookbook: The right recipe is key to a killer cookout, and The Photo Cookbook has more than enough to whet your appetite. But as its name suggests, what makes the app truly great is its illustrated instructions that walk you through every step, from slicing and dicing to cutting and presentation. Follow its detailed pictures to a gorgeous grilled glazed duck and you'll never look at The Joy of Cooking quite the same way again.
King of the Grill: If you're looking for a way to pass the time while your brisket is slowly getting tender, you can always play a game of King of the Grill. Rack up points while you sear kabobs and steaks to perfection while avoiding pesky spiders. Just try not to let your real food burn while you're playing.
