Looking for the safest luxury SUV? It’s hard to get past this one. Engineered by Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) team, the new Range Rover Sentinel has been designed to withstand high-velocity, armor-piercing incendiary bullets and DM51 grenade explosions from both beneath the floor and above the roof.
Based on the Range Rover Autobiography edition, the hand-built Sentinel was developed from a six-piece armored passenger cell, made of super-high-strength steel. The standard glass on the luxury SUV has been replaced by multi-laminated armor privacy glass to withstand being hit by bullets.
Other unique equipment includes an anti-tamper exhaust, a self-sealing fuel tank, auxiliary back-up battery and a split charging system. The load space in the Sentinel even features anti-smash protective glass to ensure ultimate protection inside, all while maintaining the luxury amenities that have made Range Rover one of the most coveted SUVs on the planet.
The specialty Range Rover (powered by a 300-plus horsepower supercharged V6) is also equipped with run-flat inserts in the tires fitted to special 20-inch split rim alloy wheels that enable the vehicle to be driven even if the tires are deflated.
Available in the UK, Europe, South America, Africa and the Middle East, the battle-ready SUV is also equipped with standard Range Rover safety technology such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Closing Vehicle Sensing and Surround Camera Security.
Optional protection features include under floor and under bonnet fire suppression systems, a customer configurable siren system, emergency service lights and an external speaker system to address people outside the vehicle from inside the cabin.
And if that doesn’t put you at ease, the high-tech luxury SUV has also has been certified against ballistic threats by QinetiQ, an independent organization once charged to help protect the British government.
About the only thing the Range Rover Sentinel doesn’t come equipped with is its own grenade launcher for firing back at attackers.
