Olympian and newly ordained Twitter celebrity Lolo Jones has officially secured a spot at the London Olympics. The American hurdler looks to improve from a disappointing seventh-place finish at the 2008 Beijing games, and thanks in part to her social media savvy she’s roused an impressive following to help cheer her to victory this summer. Here’s a bio-gallery to help you get to know her.
Jones first gained attention in the sporting world when she won three NCAA titles and 11 All-American honors while running at LSU.
After college, she contemplated leaving the sport when she failed to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
She kept at it and qualified for the 2008 Beijing games, where she was favored to take gold in the 100-meter hurdles.
Nearing victory in the finals, she stumbled on the second-to-last hurdle, lost her momentum and dropped to seventh place.
Jones won fans for handling defeat with dignity and has since been the subject of extensive media coverage, including a segment on HBO’s Real Sports (where she reported that she’s still a virgin) and a semi-nude photo shoot in ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue (see page two).
Jones also maintains a healthy presence on Twitter, where she’s racked up over 100,000 followers with her humorous quips and insights into the world of a professional track athlete. Like this gem: “Kid yells on flight.didnt phase me. Maybe I'm ready 4 kids. Kid looks at my goldfish snacks.i shot him a Casey Anthony look. Nope.not ready” Yeah. We like this girl.
