Maria Sharapova has done it again, winning the women’s singles title at the 2012 French Open over the weekend. That gives her 27 total titles as well as the vaunted “career Grand Slam.” Now that she is back on top, you might want to get to know her better. Sharapova was born in Russia and took up tennis as a kid.
Her family moved to Florida when she was 7 so she could attend the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, a full-time tennis boarding school known for producing players like Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Anna Kournikova.
She gained attention in the tennis world in her early teens, and became a household name after winning Wimbledon in 2004.
Sharapova became number one in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings in 2005.
In 2007 she developed a shoulder injury that plagued her for two years, putting her career on hiatus and knocking her from the rankings.
She’s clearly returned to form since, having taken eight more titles since recovering from her injury.
Being a good-looking gal, Sharapova has done a lot of modeling on top of her tennis career, appearing in ads for fashion houses and sports lines alike. She also made a notable appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, which, surprisingly, did not set off a worldwide call for the creation of a bikini tennis league. Someday...
