You never want to see a car explode, let alone disintegrate. That’s what you’re conditioned to believe, at least. But then you see the gorgeous, meticulously created artwork of Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner. In his latest project, titled Disintegration II, he’s deconstructed iconic scale-model cars and photographed each component piece by piece to create the illusion of an explosion. So, in that case, yes, you do want to see it. Let’s take a look.
The five cars featured in the series are an Auto Union Type C, a 1957 Maserati 250F, a 1969 Ford GT40, a Bugatti 57 SC and an ’80s-era Porsche 956.
The impressive photo series looks like CGI, but it’s the real deal—just a man with a camera and a better eye for detail than the rest of us.
Although the photos appear to be a moment in time, each was created over the course of two months and by blending more than 2,000 individual images together.
Fabian’s artwork is on display at the MAD Gallery in Geneva, so if you’re in the neighborhood, swing through to see them in person.
