OK, first off, sit down before you have a Zack Attack. A Saved by the Bell-themed restaurant opened in Chicago this week. It’s called Saved by the Max and it’s modeled after the hangout from the show, The Max, and it’s glorious. Come with us as we guide you through a tour of all of its Screech-tastic nooks and crannies.
The NBC-sanctioned restaurant was initially supposed to be a one-month pop-up joint, but it sold out in 10 minutes, so they added two more months. It could be open even longer.
Not everything in the place is functional. The main door looks just like it does on the show—except the door doesn’t open. Also, the glass bricks are actually just paper printouts.
While inside the restaurant, you’ll hear theme music from the show as well as interscene riffs. You know, those electric guitar stings that would transition you from a scene with Kelly and Lisa to a scene with Zack and Mr. Belding.
Unlike the Max on the show, there is a working bar and an open-air kitchen. They’re located in an area you never saw on the Saved by the Bell set.
The creators of the restaurant also threw in show touches outside the realm of the Max, like Kelly Kapowski’s locker and Mr. Belding’s office.
The food is a lot fancier than the grub served in the original Max. Instead of fries in a red plastic basket, they’ve got seasonal vegetables, Goose Island-marinated A.C. Sliders and Mac ‘n’ Screech (mac and cheese) served in a cast-iron skillet. There’s also a double-decker Bayside Burger, of course.
Cocktails include the “I’m So Excited,” with vodka, Red Bull tropical, rosé, brandied lingonberry reduction (?) and lemon juice. Which will definitely be what Elizabeth “Jessie Spano” Berkley orders when she visits.
Every waitress at the restaurant is a Kelly clone, and every song on the jukebox is “A-12.”
So what’s next in this vein? A bar that’s exactly like the one from Cheers? A coffee shop like the one from Friends (or Frasier)? An airport terminal like the one from Wings? A strip club like the one from The Sopranos?? We’d check it out. You know, for the story.Photos: Omni Feed
