Pippa Middleton—the royal sister-in-law who stole the show at her sister Kate’s wedding to Prince William last summer—is making headlines this week on a couple of counts. First, it was scandal, after Miss Middleton was photographed in a car with a French aristocrat who aimed a toy gun at the paparazzi pursuing them. Today she’s in the news once again, this time on a more positive note, having been named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people, along with her princess sister (because being a regular fixture in supermarket tabloids now counts as influence). In any case, it’s hard to deny that the girl is a joy to look at. On that note, here’s a gallery of her better shots for your perusing pleasure, along with some info on the British socialite’s recent media spectacle.
Middleton (right) was captured driving in Paris with a group of French aristocrats, one of whom decided to have some fun with the paparazzi by aiming a toy gun at them.
The story immediately blew up, with Middleton taking flak in the press for associating herself with such antics, and pundits speculating that the group could face criminal charges under France’s gun laws. In the news world, this type of story is commonly referred to as “garbage.”
The photographer who snapped the offending photos later said he knew right away that the gun wasn’t real. By then, though, the media circus was already in full swing.
One of the French aristocrats (a term most people haven't heard since tenth grade world history) went on to issue an apology in an attempt to clear Pippa's name, stating that "She had been subject to constant and dangerous harassment by paparazzi throughout her time in Paris... As a joke, my friend brandished a toy pistol in their direction."
Middleton’s Time honor is something of a surprise. She and her sister Kate both made the magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people despite the fact that neither of them ever actually says anything in public. They just kind of walk around and get their pictures taken.
Then again, seeing pictures of Miss Middleton does lift the spirits, so in a way she’s doing a public service. Yeah, we’ll go with that.
