Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as secret agent Black Widow in The Avengers, hitting theaters this week. The part finds her battling evildoers, uttering clever one-liners and leaping around in a skintight jumpsuit. Can’t wait? Here’s a bio-gallery to hold you over until Friday.
Johansson has been acting since she was nine years old. Her first gig was a part in the fantasy comedy North.
She gained prominence as a child (and later teen) actress with roles in The Horse Whisperer and Ghost World.
She made the move to adult roles in 2003 with Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation. Johansson received high praise from critics for her role opposite Bill Murray as a lonely young wife displaced in Tokyo.
In 2011, she audition for the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but was turned down because the filmmakers felt she was too attractive for the part.
In addition to acting, Johansson also serves as a global ambassador for aid organization Oxfam.
Johansson is an avid Tom Waits fan, and recorded an album of Waits covers in 2008.
Next year, she’ll appear in the biopic Hitchcock as actress Janet Leigh (who played Norman Bates’ shower-stabbing victim in the original Psycho). Of course, she might be a little too hot for that role, too.
