donald trump and ted cruz

His presidential campaign is over, but his insanely contradictory words about The Donald remain.

Noted sex toy opponent Ted Cruz had a bad week, including watching his proposed running mate fall off a stage (as well as hearing her sing), former Republican Senate colleague John Boehner calling him “a miserable son of a bitch”, two viral heckler encounters and, as he ended his presidential bid, punching and elbowing his wife in the face.

Yet Cruz leaves behind a legacy. Whether through public pronouncements or random tweets, he somehow established himself as one of Donald Trumps’ greatest champions and most scathing critics. (Which wasn’t ideal in helping him deal with Trump’s “Lyin’ Ted” nickname.)

The campaign is over, but the words remain: See if you can detect the subtle evolution of Cruz’s take on Trump. Hint: It occurs before he starts referencing Back to the Future Part II.

“I will continue to sing Donald’s praises personally.” February 3, 2016
“Donald, you’re a sniveling coward.” March 24, 2016

“I like Donald Trump. He’s bold, he’s brash, and I get that it seems the favorite sport of the Washington media is to encourage some Republicans to attack other Republicans. I ain’t going to do it. I’m not interested in Republican on Republican violence.” July 5, 2015

“I salute Donald Trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration. The Washington cartel doesn’t want to address that. The Washington cartel doesn’t believe we need to secure the borders. The Washington cartel supports amnesty and I think amnesty’s wrong, and I salute Donald Trump for focusing on it. He has a colorful way of speaking. It’s not the way I speak, but I’m not going to engage in the media’s game of throwing rocks and attacking other Republicans.” July 5, 2015

“Quite a few members of this field have attacked Donald Trump. A lot of folks in the media have asked me ‘Ted Cruz, will you do the same?’ I have been glad to praise Donald Trump for speaking out boldly and brashly and for focusing on illegal immigration.” August 2, 2015

“The Establishment’s only hope. Trump & me in a cage match. Sorry to disappoint — @realDonaldTrump is terrific. #DealWithIt.” December 11, 2015

“Listen, I like and respect Donald. Six weeks ago, Donald was singing my praises every day, saying I was a friend, saying I was terrific. Then our numbers started surging, his numbers started falling. Then Donald began attacking me each and every day, in personal and direct terms… I have not responded in kind, and I don’t intend to. I will continue to sing Donald’s praises personally.” February 3, 2016

“I think people are asking themselves, ‘How would we feel if our children came in repeating the words of the President of the United States if that President was Donald Trump?’ And if it would embarrass you to have your children repeat the words of the President, that’s not a good thing.” March 5, 2016

“Pic of your wife not from us. Donald, if you try to attack Heidi, you’re more of a coward than I thought. #classless” March 22, 2016

“Donald, you’re a sniveling coward and leave Heidi the hell alone.” March 24, 2016

“The man is utterly immoral.” May 3, 2016

“He is proud of being a serial philanderer… he describes his own battles with venereal diseases as his own personal Vietnam.” May 3, 2016

“A narcissist at a level I don’t think this country’s ever seen.” May 3, 2016

“This man is a pathological liar, he doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies… in a pattern that is straight out of a psychology textbook, he accuses everyone of lying.” May 3, 2016

“Donald is a bully… bullies don’t come from strength, they come from weakness.” May 3, 2016

“If anyone has seen the movie Back to the Future II, the screenwriter says that he based the character Biff Tannen on Donald Trump—a caricature of a braggadocious, arrogant buffoon who builds giant casinos with giant pictures of him wherever he looks…  We are looking potentially at a Biff Tannen presidency.” May 3, 2016
